Jordan’s history

In 1897, G. L. Jordan began his journey in the baking industry as an assistant in the Burke Bakery in Kansas City. Over the next decade, he honed his skills and expertise from the ground up. In 1907, Jordan purchased a bakery in Horton, Kansas, which he renamed Jordan Bakery. Moving forward, he sold the Horton Plant and acquired the College Hill Bakery in Topeka, Kansas, in 1911. Initially starting with just three employees and one oven, the bakery experienced remarkable growth. In 1919, it merged with the Campbell Baking Company. In 1923, Jordan embarked on a new venture, establishing the Jordan Baking Company at 601 East Fifth Street. By June 1924, the new plant was up and running. By 1936, the company was delivering baked goods throughout Topeka and neighboring states, boasting modern equipment and extensive expansion. By 1938, the Jordan Bakery employed seventy-one workers, with an annual payroll of approximately $125,000, providing vital support to over 400 Kansans. Notably, many employees had served the bakery for an average of ten years, a testament to its enduring commitment to its workforce.
